DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERRACOTTA TILES

1. Low-Density and High-Density Tiles:-

Terracotta tiles for exterior categorize as high-density or low-density materials primarily based on their thickness. High-density tiles are thicker and more resistant to cracking, making them suitable for heavy-use areas. On the other hand, low-density tiles are thinner and may not withstand heavy use or wet conditions well.

2. Color Variations:-

Terracotta tiles exhibit natural color variations influenced by the clay’s source location. Colors typically range from yellow to dark brown, with various reddish hues in between. For example, Saltillo terracotta, sourced from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, is known for its distinctive blend of yellow and reddish tones. Other color varieties include antique Saltillo, manganese, and Spanish mission red.

3. Natural, Burnished, or Sealed Tiles:-

Terracotta tiles are available in natural, burnished, or sealed finishes. In their natural state, terracotta tiles showcase a mix of red and earthy hues, creating unique patterns across each tile’s surface. However, natural terracotta is porous and susceptible to water damage or stains. To mitigate these risks, manufacturers often treat terracotta tiles with sealants for protection. Another manufacturing process used is burnishing, which reduces absorbency by polishing the surface with fine abrasives, resulting in a denser, smoother finish.

3. Glazed Terracotta:-

During a secondary firing process, glazed terracotta tiles for exterior  bond a glass-like surface finish to the clay tile. This results in a glossy finish that is easy to distinguish from unglazed tiles. Glazing not only adds color to the tiles but also creates a waterproof surface that is resistant to stains. However, it covers the natural earthen colors of the terracotta, which may impact the aesthetic appeal. For those seeking a balance between appearance and functionality, hand-glazed or hand-painted terracotta tiles are available. These options retain some of the tile’s natural beauty while improving stain and water resistance.

4. Unglazed Terracotta: –

Unglazed terracotta tiles, on the other hand, maintain their natural, earthy appearance without any additional surface treatment. While they may lack the glossy finish of glazed tiles, unglazed terracotta – showcases the authentic beauty of the clay material, including its unique color variations and textures. However, unglazed terracotta is more porous and susceptible to staining and water damage compared to glazed tiles.

MACHINE-CUT AND HANDMADE TERRACOTTA TILES

Machine-Cut Terracotta Tiles

  • Machine-cut terracotta tiles undergo a factory-based process involving firing, cutting, and offloading tiles into precise, computer-guided geometric forms.
  • These tiles exhibit uniform size and shape, resulting in a consistent look in the final installation.
  • While retaining the natural beauty of the iron-laced clay colors, machine-cut tiles are more consistent in shape and dimension, making installation easier.

Handmade Terracotta Tiles

  • The irregularities add character to each tile but may also pose challenges during installation due to size discrepancies.
  • Crafted using traditional methods indigenous to regions like Mexico and much of southern Europe, handmade terracotta tiles showcase intricate craftsmanship.
  • This artisanal process results in tiles with imprecise cuts and slight irregularities, enhancing the earthen appeal of the material.
  • Prized for their unique charm, handmade terracotta tiles can be more expensive due to the labor-intensive craftsmanship involved.
